I have the same problem  (Linux Mint 17.1 KDE) with a little variation.

I don't have the issue about a changed user picture. 

The workaround with setting the password in the terminal, log in into new user
account etc. does not make the new user visible in the user manager of the
original user account. 
However, both users are visible in the user manager in the new user account.
