Thanks a lot for your quick answer. 
Ok for .exl files.
For .xml files, some are opened with konqueror, others with emacs and others a
popup window asks me for an application. Editing the file association does not
change anything. 
It is maybe a problem with opensuse 12.3. It did not occur with kde 4.10.
