This seems to be a regression of a years-old bug:

I'm using KDE 4.8.3.  I started a search with kfind, searching file contents. 
I then pressed Stop several times, but nothing happened.  I clicked Close, and
the window disappeared, but kfind was still running and searching the disk.  I
had to kill the kfind process.
