Hmm, now the crash has stopped! I uninstalled compiz first (since I was not
using it), so maybe that was it. Although now instead when I log in to KDE, it
frequently stops part way through the session startup and drops me back to the
kdm login screen(!). I reinstaled compiz, but no change - it still sometimes
crashes on login -- but with no crash handler so I don't have a backtrace --,
but no longer on logout!
