The overwrite of kgammarc occurs on logout/reboot, not during login. 
When removing write permission on kgammarc and rebooting, system settings
reports the gamma value from kgammarc (0.85), but "xgamma -gamma" reports 1.0
and based on the actual brigthnes the gamma apears to be 1.0.
