I also tried a non-KDE Qt4 application: qmmp.

If I try to open the file-open dialog, the dialog appears instantaneously. No
delays and no crash. The app works the way I expect it to work.
This is what the app shows in the terminal, around the time that I request the
file browser:

QtFileDialogFactory::create()
KGlobal::locale::Warning your global KLocale is being recreated with a valid
main component instead of a fake component, this usually means you tried to
call i18n related functions before your main component was created. You should
not do that since it most likely will not work 
Visual::~Visual()
QtFileDialog::~QtFileDialog()
