I forgot to mention something about the "new user":

Same thing happens with Paul Bryan Roberts from url:

The KDM login screem appears (kdm_greet), I enter user id and password and
press return. Screen goes blank, very briefly a white window appears in the top
left of the screen, and then I find myself looking at the tty1 console
login.The kdm_greet process is gone but kdm is still running. However the X
session cannot be recovered.

Also,
when I give startkde command it says "Kaboom cannot connect to X Server"
