Yeah, the steps you mention is what I wrote too (only less detailed). If you
want to avoid switching to virtual terminals and logging in as sudo, the
easiest way to automate this process is to add to add "restart kdm" (without
sudo, without quotes) to the file "/etc/rc.local".

Also, a log during startup can be dound by typing "dmesg" or by looking at the
file "/var/log/dmesg". Sorry but I have not been able to find a log for the
shutdown process either...
