This should be possible in both directions, but since I don't actually have
GNOME installed I cannot test this. You can try logging out, start a clean
GNOME session instead of KDE, and run "plasma-desktop" from a shell. It should
give you the Plasma desktop running inside GNOME.
On the reverse, something started the GNOME desktop while you were running the
KDE session. This could be, for example, a specific file type that binds itself
to the GNOME browser or desktop. You could ask on a GNOME related forum which
command starts the desktop (i.e. the GNOME equivalent of KDE's "plasma-desktop"
command) and run that command whenever you want to enjoy this "feature" again
:)
Reassigning to Plasma developers to check the Paste widget issue. Optionally
this could be turned into a feature request for plasma-desktop to "embed" a
GNOME desktop somehow, or simply by overriding it (per virtual desktop) as
indicated in this bug report.
