Hi Christoph.
I am currently using Gnome because Kde in my machine is not usable since
version 4.4 more or less. I also had to expand memory since 2GB ram were not 
enough to run it.. Since I use my machine at work, as soon as I have some spare
time I will give a try to your suggestions.

What I can say now is that Compositing and desktop effects are disabled.
As to anti aliasing, my option was "System preferences". I do not know where to
set monochrome in systemsettings.

As to noveau, I am quite new to it and I do not know whether it is stable and
suitable for my NVidia card with 2 monitors. I am currently using NVidia
official drivers.

By the way, gnome runs fine...
