Clean install of KUbuntu Lucid, 32-bit desktop running in Virtual Box

When I start Kate from the command line, I see the following errors in the
console:

$ kate .bashrc

file or directory
QFileSystemWatcher: failed to add paths: /home/cubranic/.config/ibus/bus
Bus::open: Can not get ibus-daemon's address.
IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon
