When I try to play the dvd in VLC (run from terminal) I get the following
error:

libdvdnav: DVD disk reports itself with Region mask 0x00e50000. Regions: 2 4 5
*** Zero check failed in ifo_read.c:1786
    for pgcit->zero_1 = 0x8d00

So I think my problem is not having the right lib to play commercial dvd's
