Summary: xorg *insist* that desktop managers should handle
                    zooming
           Product: kde
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Compiled Sources
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: unassigned-bugs at kde.org
        ReportedBy: peter_s_d at fastmail.com.au

Version: unspecified (using KDE 4.4.3)
OS: Linux

A long time ago it used to be possible to use the <ctrl><alt><keypad+/-> keys
to zoom the entire desktop. The virtual desktop would stay unchanged, but the
screen mode would change allowing the user to pan around the virtual desktop.
I found this "hardware zoom" a wonderful disability aid. (I have poor
eyesight.) I believe that it still works with the closed source nVidia and ATI
drivers, but xorg disabled it from the open source drivers because they insist
that it could and should be handled (better) by the desktop managers.

<https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14688>

As an interim measure I think that I will buy a new nVidia card so that I can
use the closed source driver and get this feature back.

The feature is still documented in "man xorg.conf".

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Hit <ctrl><alt><keypad +>, nothing happens.

Actual Results:
Absolutely nothing (with the open source drivers).

Expected Results:
Panning should be enabled.

Possibly execute a command like; "xrandr --fb <virtual_desktop_size> --output
default --mode <next_mode_on_Display_Subsection_Modes_line> --panning
<vitual_desktop_size>".
