I have the exact same problem for over a year and a half now. I cannot use KDE
4 daily on my laptop, which is my main computer, and I have been using gnome
for all this time just because the desktop becomes unusable after a while
(10-20 minutes). Here is a screenshot of my system monitor :

I also have an Acer Aspire 5680 laptop, 2Gb RAM, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600.
