This may be a sign that things are still going downhill...  attempts to switch
user and logging in (kdm) now give a KDE3.5 splash screen with no icons; only
the text which stops at "Loading desktop"

I'm tempted to mark this bug critical; but I believe that's a KDE developer's
choice...
