Summary: KDE print dialog loads very slowly
Product: kde
Version: unspecified
Platform: Gentoo Packages
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: unassigned-bugs at kde.org
ReportedBy: robdockins at fastmail.fm
Version: (using KDE 4.1.3)
Compiler: gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.1)
OS: Linux
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
When I attempt to print from any KDE4 application (e.g Okular), the print
dialog takes a very long time to load (approx 10 minutes). During this time,
the application is unusable, the print dialog is not shown, and there is
apparently no way to cancel the action. I am using the CUPS print server, and
my primary printer is set up as an IPP printer. Once the dialog finally
displays, I can choose my printer from among the various other printers in the
list, which are apparently discovered on the network as I have not configured
them.
Printing from non-KDE4 applications (such as firefox) do not experience similar
delays.
My strong suspicion is that the print dialog is initiating a network scan for
printer discovery each time it is opened. If so, this is terribly inefficent
and not very good network etiquette. Evidence of this is that setting "Browse
Off" in my cupsd.conf file causes the delay to disappear.
For me, this is an acceptable workaround, but I feel it should not be
necessary. A utility dialog box should not be performing uncancelable, long
duration I/O activities during its initilization which render the application
unusable.
