KDE 3.5 does not mount automatically the drives when they are plugged/inserted,
but you always have to double click on their icon or tell to mount them in the
"new media" dialog it popups.

There is a "Device Manager" widget for Plasma, much like KDE 3.5's mediamanager
applet for the panel.
