Please could you answer a few questions to help pinpoint this bug.

First, when you say even alsamixer doesn't change the volume, what volume to you mean? The desktop sound effects? Amarok playback? something else?

Does the volume change effect non-KDE4 apps running in your KDE4 session? For example, does amarok or kaffeine from KDE3's volume stay the same when running in a KDE4 session.

Any more detail you can provide will be very useful.
