When I login again to my KDE 3 desktop, all KDE 4 applications I started are replaced with KDE 3 equivalents. For example, instead of restoring /usr/bin/kopete, /opt/kde3/bin/kopete is restarted even though I did explicitly start the KDE 4 version from the KDE-menu.

My $PATH is currently:
