Summary: Unable to install additional packages in Kubuntu 8.10
           Product: kde
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Ubuntu Packages
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: unassigned-bugs kde org
        ReportedBy: kevbert1 sky com

Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
OS: Linux

I'm running Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Alpha1 64 bit on an AMD64 PC.
When I try to install additional packages via the Kickstart menu (selecting either Add/Remove programs item), I get the 'Run as root - KDE su' window suggesting I need to install adept. If I enter no password or my login password, 'invalid password' is displayed. I have not set up a root password.
This may be related. I seem to have no means of updating packages via the menus (is this due to adept not being installed ?) I can however install updates via the bash terminal. If I scroll over Adept Notifier it tells me that I have 8 updates, I try to install these via terminal and the updates are ignored. The Adept Notifier still tells me I have 8 available updates, even if I reboot and then try to perform a new install of the updates. If I right click on the notifier I only have options About and Quit. A left click does nothing.
