My apologies, I should have updated this:

I discussed this with Sebastian Kuegler and Aaron Seigo.

We agreed this was two bugs:

 1. xrandr problems that should have been fixed in the latest beta (need to confirm)

 2. an impossible to reproduce kwin bug that might have been caused by #1 and which Sebastian and I agreed to file under "happened once and was annoying back then" until it resurfaces.

So please close this bug for now, I will test the xrandr issue asap and will reopen another one for kwin if the problem reappears.
