Summary: KDE freezes after changing desktop fonts
Product: kde
Version: unspecified
Platform: unspecified
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: unassigned-bugs kde org
ReportedBy: sombragris sombragris org
Version: (using KDE 4.0.0)
Compiler: gcc 4.1.2
OS: Linux
Even though this is not a crash per se, it is pretty serious since the whole desktop freezes.
How it happens: After customizing desktop fonts (by invoking systemsettings, "Appearance" in the Look and Feel area), and applying changes either by pressing OK or Apply, the system stops responding. Buttons and windows become totally non-responsive, and this includes the panel and elements within it. The keyboard remains functional, however, and one can get to the virtual ttys by the usual method of pressing Ctrl-Alt-Fnkey.
Examination with top (after switching to a text console) reveals that kwin is using 96% of the CPU.
Killing kwin restores responsiveness in the desktop, but it becomes unusable since kwin is not running and no application can be launched. However, a clean log out is possible.
Thanks for any help into this matter.
