Hi,
I run KDE on vmware fusion. The virtual graphics card does not support composite effects and neither, probably do older video cards.
It is good that desktop effects are therefore off by default but turning them on destroys the desktop leaving a black screen with a nice white square in it. The only way to restart KDE without this pretty design is to change the setting manually in the config files. As I do not know which config file it is, this meant deleting .kde4 folder.
