The problem still persists in kde 4.1
Now Using:
Version:           unknown (using 4.1.0 (KDE 4.1.0), Gentoo)
Compiler:          i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc-4.3.1
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.26-zen2.0
HAL:               0.5.11
NTFS-3G:           1.2712

Though in the partitions section in kinfocenter it correctly identifies the partition as ntfs-3g
