This was the error message:

cvs server: cannot find module `up' - ignored
cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot expand modules

Here is the contents of the script I am using for cron.daily:

CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous at cvs.uml.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/uml

cvs -z3 co up uml

In the meantime I left away the 'up' parameter and then it works fine.
