[Uml-user] tuntap networking

Hi

I am trying to setup the networking.  I have a
2.4.18.1 uml patched kernel running on a 2.4.18
kernel.

I passed eth0=tuntap,,,192.168.0.254 on the uml
command line.  the dmesg output indicates that

"Netdevice 0: TUN/TAP backend - IP = 192.168.0.254
then dev_ip_addr - device not assigned an ip address
Invalid UML ip address - ' '
the tap ip address and UML  eth IP address must be
different."

ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.254 up or 192.168.0.255 up
both fail with SIOCSIFFLAGS: Invalid argument..

any ideas
