My two previous comments were incorrect. The behavior is actually even
stranger, and it is the same under both Wayland and X11.

If you create an asynchronous message and check its properties, the “Auto
Resize” option is enabled, and then it is impossible to resize it.

However, if you create an asynchronous message and do not check its properties,
but simply try to resize it by dragging from the bottom of the box, you can
resize it. If you then check its properties, the “Auto Resize” option appears
to be disabled.

It is like Schrödinger’s cat ;-)
