You can resize the synchronous message box on the receiving lifeline if no
element is selected. To do so, press and hold the left mouse button directly on
the end of the box, then move the mouse while keeping the button pressed.

It is true that this can be difficult to do without accidentally moving the
object instead of resizing it, but there is at least a way to resize the box.
