If you want to evenly distribute life lines in a seq diagram, for example.

By using borders you'd get:

     <->         <->

+---+   +-------+   +-----------+
+---+   +-------+   +-----------+
  |         |             |
  |         |             |

   <-------> <----------->

If class boxes are different in size to fit class/object names, lifelines will not be equally spaced.
