cursors can use png images, not only the xpm format. I have no time to do
further research in this field now, but I know it works (there are plenty of
cursor themes at www.kde-look.org and I have even found a tutorial on how to
write cursor themes. I do not remeber the address, though.

you may find the sources of the icons I have made. As it was mentioned
earlier, works properly only with Inkscape 0.38. If anyone would manage to
get these converted to "plain SVG" or modify them to be able to display the
icons properly with the KDE SVG facilities... conversion would then work
like charm (there is a little program in kdelibs/pics that makes the pngs
all by itself).
