What I mean by 'produce' is that a developer creates the Makefile.am by
hand putting in the files and other arguments in the file that are
necessary to build that directory. In this file there are comments
explaining what is going on its there something being done out of the
ordinary. One of those things might 'What is xdg_appsdir'.

Sure the file must exist to enable the compilation of the directory.
What I am against is anything that makes it difficult to verify the
result of the file. Its hard, not terribly, to read the contents but as
with any code you have a coding style. I don't see why that cannot be
done in the Makefile.am files whether they are autogenerated by "make -f
Makefile.cvs" or not.
