on umbrello files of various age.

To answer your particular question, see umlrole.cpp:1.12,
loadFromXMI():

if (element.hasAttribute("documentation")) // for bkwd compat.
    m_Doc = element.attribute("documentation", "");
else
    m_Doc = element.attribute("comment", "");
