okay... i think we're basically on the same page here :) i'm pretty much 
thinking the exact 
same stuff you are - except i don't like the term "widget" to refer to 
artifacts on a diagram. 
can we call them artifacts? so we'd have a set of UML artifacts that know how 
to render 
UML shapes and generic artifacts for stuff like text, boxes, whatever. i also 
like the plugins.
 
more on this later. i have to tutor for computer organization and assembly :)
