What I want to say is the following:

When ever you change a object inside umbrello (add a attribute, remove it or
change it) you have to pay attention to the serialize function of the object
(and therefore to the import of the old style files).
In umbrello the cut and paste function works on the widget and on the data
object of an UML object (in the meaning of the UML) . Each UML element
(widget and data) has his own set of attributes in the corresponding classes
so the serialize function must be class specific. There is at this time no
way to simplify this.

I hope it is now a little bit more understandable what I want to say.
