detect album is a compilation

hi,

i'm trying to write an audio player and want to scan the mp3-tags of my
collection.
i have the problem, that i have an album that has multiple artists.
how do i detect that this album is a compilation, so that i can assign
multiple artists to that album?
one approach right now is, to memorize the albums folder and so link the
album with the artists. but that doesn't seems the best way for me!
any help appreciated!
