FileRef class crashes on files it can't open

See downstream bug filed,

Seems taglib FileRef api crashes in cases it hits files it cannot open 
(whether that's due to permissions or non-existing at least).  I looked 
through the api documentation for any assumptions or guaranties wrt 
readability, without success.

So, is this a bug/oversight in taglib or in calling applications?
