Question on FileRef usage

Hi List, I have a fairly simple question on the usage of
bool TagLib::FileRef::isNull (  )  const
What kind of situations would one employ this function?
I was originally trying to use TagLib::File::isValid(), on an instantiated
FileRef, however this causes some issues (a segfault). So clearly i must be
doing something wrong.
My purpose at the moment, is to figure out if an arbitrary file can be read
by taglib, is there something I am overlooking?
