I see, that simplifies things, but AFAIU you still need a (linux)
installation of every supported R version to get there (and an update
for every future version of R)?

If it's easy to do, I'm all for providing "binaries", too. I'm just
trying to get the barrier low enough that we will actually provide
timely updates in the future (something we have not been terribly good
at, so far).
