For what it's worth, I just added a commit to always place newly
attached windows in the pane which was active, most recently. This had
been the intended behavior, before, but was broken. I.e. to place the
plot window at the right, split the view, select whichever window is on
the right hand side, then attach the plot window.

Of course it would be must nicer to be able to just drag windows
between split views, but that seems to require more effort than it is
worth, code-wise.
