The following forum message was posted by tfry at http://sourceforge.net/projects/rkward/forums/forum/165574/topic/4101958:

Hi,

I used to lean against using a separate text file, esp. since this gives a headache
for remote URLs. On the other hand, remote URLs are rare in the first place,
and probably, the workplace representation is meaningless in this case, anyway.
So I decided to go with a separate file, indeed.

As a by-product, there are two new R functions rk.save.workplace() and
rk.restore.workplace(), which might be of interest to power users (these could
be used to switch between several sets of opened script windows).

IIRC, you are using Ubuntu? Then perhaps you may be interested in giving tomorrow's
daily builds a try: https://launchpad.net/~rkward-devel/+archive/rkward-dailys
. Otherwise, you can compile from SVN (http://p.sf.net/rkward/svn).

BTW, the workplace save file now also includes information on the "base" directory
of the current workspace. In case the workspace has moved, for each script file
to restore, RKWard will first try to open it from the old (absolute) location,
and if it does not exist, there, RKWard will try to load it from an adjusted
(relative) location. Thus, future versions should generally be able to cope
with moved directories out of the box, without the need for manual editing.

Regards
Thomas
