Sorry for the late reply.

You do have a point. At least some of these statistics are certainly valid for
character data, as well. Other statistics cannot be computed, and we would need
to add code to make sure that computation can continue in case of errors.

Note that the "Descriptive Statistics" plugin shows considerable overlap with
"Basic Statistics", and will accept character data. Ideally, the two plugins
should be merged into one, which supports all features. That will happen, eventually,
but it will probably take time, before a developer gets around to look at it.
