rkward needs to be recompiled for R 2.9, also the fix for Rdevices.h
has to be made. Can you compile it from source? If so, kindly find a
recent (test) version for KDE3 (assuming you are running KDE3) here:

http://rkward.sourceforge.net/temp/rkward-0.4.9b-test1.tar.gz

For this you'll need r-base-dev, kdelibs4-dev, automake1.9, and
autotools-dev. Then the usual steps of ./configure, make, make
install. You may need to use --with-r-home=/path/to/R/home with
configure, if the backports' installation is not at the usual
location.

I would suggest using the rkward-users list for further discussion on
this instead of r-sig-debian.

Johannes is also part of the rkward list, so I guess he is aware of
the recent thread on this issue. He might just be able to provide a
deb file for this source :)

For lenny backports, depending on whether, KDE4 or KDE3 is being
targeted, may be two versions of rkward are needed - rkward (0.4.9x)
and rkward0.5.
