I am not totally happy, for much the same reason, but I can see that this is not exactly a mainstream feature in cmake, so unlikely to get addressed all too soon. Could you still make that request?

OTOH, tar is probably an indirect build dependency, already. On debian it is via r-base-dev->build-essentials. I believe on other systems r-base-dev will also pull in tar in some form or another (notably, the use of tar, here, is to create a "package" that R will unpack). So, I'll merge this all the same.
