I believe, this is a more correct way to cite not-yet-printed articles. See e.g. citations in these papers:
www.jstatsoft.org/v22/i08/paper
www.jstatsoft.org/v25/i08/paper

Besides, with the other variant, there is an additional line break, which seriously messes up the layout on subsequent pages
(shifts several figures to the next page, for example).
