The minimal example to reproduce this turn out to be embarrassingly simple:
> dev.capabilities()

Probably affects some version of R, only. Underlying feature was added in R
4.2.0. Tested, and confirmed to crash in R 4.3.3. Seems not to crash in R devel
(future 4.5).

Should be fixable, soonish.
