proposal to re-work the welcome page

i am experiencing some *real* performance issues ATM, the more files i open. 
it takes minutes to actually open the editor, CPU is at 100%, and while this 
is happening, the HTML page in /tmp is being rebuilt several times. when i 
close the welcome page, there's no such lag, so i'm guessing this could be 
related to updating the list of opened files.
