OTOH, tar is probably an indirect build dependency, already. On debian it is via r-base-dev->build-essentials. I believe on other systems r-base-dev will also pull in tar in some form or another (notably, the use of tar, here, is to create a "package" that R will unpack). So, I'll merge this all the same.
