well, for all I can see, all available solutions have some real drawbacks. On
my system, perl is no problem, while my rJava installation tends to be broken,
frequently. But certainly, for many users it will be the other way around.
You have already implemented a solution based on the gdata package. Looking at
read.xlsx (and read.xlsx2) from xlsx, I think most options can be mapped to
that, in a straight-forward way. So perhaps it is feasible to support both in
a single plugin, after all, with a radio-control to select the method to use?
