If you just want to see, whether it compiles, do	"make"
in the directory of the file in question.
If you want to test it "in action", you'll have to run "make"
in the top source directory. There is no other way. Typically there is no need 
to run "make install", though. Once all the required data files have been 
installed (and have not changed since then), you can also run directly from 
the source directory (the binary is in the subdirectory rkward).
