Thomas has created (is creating) a import plugin which will handle SPSS files. 
For those of you who don't have SPSS files (likely if you work on Linux only 
with R) here are some links to files which can be used for testing purposes:

@ Thomas. I tried to find something about Umlauts? There isn't any option in 
read.spss {foreign} I guess. Right?
